Hi all! I’m still learning my way around here, so forgive me if this has been addressed elsewhere. I have a wordpress.com blog, and have been trying to decide if it’s worth paying for my own domain name. The problem is that the name I really want, with a .com address, isn’t available. WordPress is offering to switch me to an .me address for $24 per year. But I see very few .me blogs out there. Are these addresses catching on, or not? I’m just not sure it would buy me much of anything.

I don’t want to monetize my blog. It’s just a hobby, but I just thought that owning my domain name might make me look more “credible.” Most of my favorite blogs have made that switch, but all to .com addresses, even though many of them are not monetized blogs. Any thoughts? Do you think less of blogs with wordpress.com in the name?

    Thanks!

    Anne

I prefer .com addresses. They seem more legit and less “spammy” in my opinion. you might consider using a dash or wording your desired domain name a bit differently to get a .com address. You can also ways try a .net address, I’ve seen lots of people using the .net when the .com isn’t available. Good luck!

Thanks so much for your input. I’m thinking about a dash — I’ve just always found them inconvenient because, as a user, I always forget if I need dash or underline and it annoys me. I may try playing with the wording, or putting the word “blog” at the end. (Nobody seems to do that, either. Huh.) I appreciate your thoughts on this topic! Thank you.
