At one point or another, almost all of us have come across a super-stylish blogger showing off an item of clothing from a sponsor or affiliate and raving about how comfortable and pretty it is. Or, maybe you’ve seen a beauty blogger reviewing a new line of hairspray or make-up. No matter what the product, blogger reviews are in high demand right now, as readers love to hear what real, relatable people think of a product before going out and buying it. Whether you’ve been approached about doing one or not, a review is something that anyone with an opinion can write. Here are some tips to keep in mind when working on your review.
Let’s start with some general pointers:
Don’t be afraid to be honest. Did you have problems with customer service? Do the sizes run smaller/bigger than expected? It’s important to let your readers know the truth, and trust me when I say brands and companies want you to be honest with your review. Just remember to keep it classy and cordial.
Be natural and authentic. Companies and brands have reached out to you to review an item because they think you’d be a good fit, but that doesn’t mean you have to fit a certain mold. Personally, I never want my reviews to sound generic. Yes, I’ll rave about an item if I am loving it, but I’ll make sure to stay true to myself, my voice, and my writing style. Otherwise, your readers will begin to question your authenticity.
Don’t accept everything that comes your way. It’s always exciting the first time a company reaches out and offers to send you a product. There is nothing wrong with saying yes if the partnership works for you! However, don’t feel obligated to take everything that is offered to you. Again, it’s your credibility and blog reputation is at stake. Accept only the items that align with your personal style and taste because that’s what readers expect to see!
You can review just about anything your heart desires. Basically, what I’m trying to say is don’t be discouraged if you have not been asked to do a review just yet. You can always review a beauty product or brand of clothing that you’ve discovered yourself! Just be sure to specify if the product was sent to you by the company (for me, a simple “c/o” does the trick), or if you bought it yourself and are doing the review with no affiliation or sponsorship.
Some other points you want to include in a product review post:
Anything visual. This just might be the most important part, as companies expect you to feature the product and show it off. You don’t need a fancy camera to take nice photos – just make sure it’s clear and creative! If it’s a piece of clothing, style it and show it off yourself, or come up with some other creative way to display the piece. If it’s a beauty product, you might want to do a visual tutorial on how to use it, either with a series of photos or a video.
Pros. Again, there’s no real format to follow with this. If your writing style is all about making quirky lists or bullet points, you could make a list of all the things you’re loving about the product. If not, you could incorporate all the different pros throughout your post. You could use a photo editing program to write on the photos and point out features that you liked. The possibilities are endless!
Cons. Naturally, pros and cons go hand in hand. If there was anything at all that you think readers deserve to know about the product, or even the experience of ordering/receiving the product, it’s your job to let it be known. Again, be cordial – there’s no need to bash a company that took the time to reach out to you. At the same time, be completely honest, because that’s what people want from a review.
Wrap up the post with a more general consensus. Will you be working with and/or shopping from this company again in the future? Should your readers check it out, or is it not worthwhile? Who would especially enjoy their products?
After a while, you’ll find that doing product reviews are so much fun. Being forthright with your opinion makes the post feel more natural and less forced, and your readers will really appreciate the genuine reviews that you’re providing. Just remember to be yourself – from picking out the product to giving it a thorough review, and the rest will fall into place!
