A Bloggers Guide to Finding Your Niche

Everyone is always talking about niche blogging.  If you look at the top bloggers, like Man Repeller, Susie Bubble, and Cupcakes & Cashmere, they all have one.  It’s about your aesthetic, your brand, your style, and your flair.  I’ll give you some tips on helping you recognize your blogging type and finding your niche.

The first step is to analyze what you already write and post about. Are you a food, beauty, or fashion blogger?  I’ll use our social media coordinator, Katie’s blog, Today I Want, as an example. She is a fashion blogger.  The next step is finding what category you fit in.  For fashion blogs, popular categories are personal style, inspirational, and DIY.  For foodies, there are also inspirational bloggers or those that make their own recipes.  Each major category can easily be divided into smaller subsets.  By narrowing down your categories as small as possible, it will help you understand your niche.  Katie does some outfit posts, some lifestyle posts, and mostly inspirational boards of her wants.  It’s alright to be multi-faceted.  As the blogging world expands, I would even recommend have many mediums in terms of posting.  Just posting outfit shots or inspirational boards can become dull to readers if you don’t find a way to make it interesting each time.

Representing who you want to be is a large part of niche blogging. What do you want to represent?  Are you someone that wants to show how to make vintage fashion wearable like Sammy Davis? Are you a vintage blogger that wants to maintain more of a pinup look like Vintage Vandalism? With these two examples, it shows how one special category of vintage fashion blogging can be made into your own niche, which brings me to the next category.

Your blog wouldn’t be anything without you.  You are the secret ingredient to your blog’s success.  Say you are a fashion blogger that really likes shoes.  Yes, there may be a number of fashion bloggers that cover shoes, but they don’t cover it in your way.  What is it about shoes you like? Do you like unique heels?  Are you someone that loves finding wearable, everyday shoes?  It all depends on your outlook.  There is only one of you, which means your viewpoint is going to be unique.  Use these traits or quirks, if you will, to find yourself.

1. Find your category: Fashion, food, mommy, lifestyle, beauty
2. Find your subset: Inspirational, DIY, Personal style
3. Find what you like about that grouping: Red lips, Fascinators, Chocolate

From there, you can find your niche.  If you’re having trouble narrowing it down, try to prioritize.  For instance, on Black & Blonde One, I talk about fashion, beauty, and lifestyle topics. I couldn’t decide where I fit. And then it dawned on me. I like things that make a statement. I think fur, feathers, and extravagant hats. That’s me. I am a statement blogger. I get that it may not be a “real category” but I’m paving my own way and hopefully you will do the same!
